Celebrate Birthday or not

Posted by admin on October 27th, 2007 filed in Uncategorized

At my current assignment I work with someone who doesn’t celebrate Birthday. His religion does not allow them to celebrate anything, except for wedding Anniversary. Most religions I have been exposed to Birthdays are celebrated and even looked forward to. I don’t enjoy my birthdays. My mom always forgets it, and everyone I am close to seems to pass away around the time of my birthdays. My mom has often told me, I was a mistake. Well I don’t think G-d makes a mistake, he created me and gave me to my family. Why I don’t know.

Over the summer my husband mom got every ill, we were worried we may lose her. When she recovered she said something. What she said, made me start seeing my birthday not as a time of feeling bad, and unwanted. Which is what i have felt on many Birthdays. She was glad she survived through everything and was thankful to the L-rd for saving her.

It’s a little after 10pm and my mom hasn’t called me. I don’t know why it bothers me because she forgets every year.

I don’t believe G-d has a problem with us celebrating our birthdays, because He gave us a age of accountability. In the Jewish faith children who are 12 for girls and 13 for boys, is when they are seen as members of the community. This is the age which is determined to know right and wrong.

In the Old Testament G-d tells us how long everyone lived. Why would G-d feel that was necessary if He felt celebrating our birthday was wrong. Celebrating is because G-d blessed you with another year of life.

Yeah, I can’t find anything in Torah that teaches against celebrating a birthday at all. Must be particular to that person.
