Prayer and the Word

During our Bible Study time this weekend, I felt it would be a good idea to find out how we were doing on some of our goals that we set. One of the goals was about reading and studying our Bible, and spending time in prayer. I was surprised to see something in our group. My husband studied a lot more of the word then spent in Prayer. Don’t get me wrong he prayers. I spent more time in Prayer, and less in studying, don’t get me wrong I study but not as much as I aught. I wonder if this almost balances us out. I know it doesn’t because I can not hear G-d for 2 people I can only hear him for myself or if He choices to show me things for both myself and my husband.
It was the opposite for each of us. My husband said he was tempted to clean out a place in his closet and start praying in his closet so that he could get the time and make it a habit. I couldn’t help but tell him I don’t think when they talked about prayer closets they meant a literal closet. In the Bible we are told not to prayer for everyone to hear or see us. This is important, I believe it is said for a few reason.
I know when I am around other people including my husband, I have a harder time spending time in prayer, I get easier distracted. It is easier to focus on Prayer when it is done by myself and it easier to draw in. I have found praying with my husband sometimes his way of praying bother me, not that he is wrong but because my way of dealing with G-d is very different then my husband. He not wrong and neither am I, it has a lot to do with our different communication styles and maybe I am more comfortable with prayer then he is. I find my husband causes me not to be able to focus, I don’t know why but maybe it just the way we are, this is something we talked about briefly in Bible Study this weekend.
Having a prayer life is very important but also is studying his word. Studying his word gives us knowledge this way if we feel lead to do something, we will know if it’s G-d’s voice or our own mind. We will know if it lines up with the word of G-d which teaches us His Characteristics. If it does not line up with his word then we know that we didn’t hear right and know to pray more about it or maybe speak to someone else further along in their faith then we are.
Prayer and studying the Word is like taking meds for blood clots or high blood pressure, the doctor may tell you, to take lipovox and tell you to exercise or to take another. With out the two thing the meds may not be as effective for the Blood pressure or blood clots, it will not be as effective, it is the same with prayer and studying. We as believers need to have both for our prayer to be more effective and for us to understand G-d’s words.
