The Upper room
Posted by admin on June 15th, 2008 filed in UncategorizedToday we had our Shavuot Picnic for my congregation. I know some people are probably scratching their heads because the Christians had there about a month ago or so, and many Jewish people had their last week. Some of this is because of the different calenders we have, and then some of it is because of the Pharisees or the Sadducees.
The Pharisees start not by using the sabbath they use forty days, the Sadducees start counting by the Sabbath and count seven from passover and then have it on the day after the seventh Sabbath and this is what my Congregation follows.
Rabbi was talking and sharing something with us today. I have heard this sermon before but I just never connected the dots. The upper room was really not like a upper room in our modern thoughts of a room on the top floor. Where would the 3,000 have fit they would not have fit in the house or even out in the street if you think about how many people there is. Each person there heard their own language being spoken so that they understood it. We all know this account of the disciples and the writer Acts chapter 2.
Acts 2: 1 (Jewish Complete Bible)
The festival of Shavuot arrived and the believers all gathered together in on place. Suddenly there came a sound from the sky like the roar of a violent wind and it filled the whole house where they where sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which separated and came to rest on each one of them. They where all filled with the Ruach Hakodesh and began to talk in different languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
This sounds familiar doesn’t it, that’s because that’s what G-d did when he first wanted to speak with Israel on the Mountain. The people of that day saw G-d words as fire that first went through the camp and then to each person individually. They became scared and asked for Moshe to mediate for them, G-d agreed, but he wanted to be able to speak to each person. This is what happened on the day of Shavuot.
The believers would have been at the temple this is where all the religious Jews of the day would have been, and they gathered around. Some asked if they where drunk and they at first where confused to be hearing their language spoke by those who would not know how to speak that language.
G-d gave us a mediator because we asked but he also said we would have to listen to the one who He sent. Yeshua before going told his disciples, He would send them the Holy Spirit. This is when they received the Holy Spirit.
The whole Spirit is like abody stockings it protects us, it keeps our spirits warm and leads us to G-d will if we are yielding to the spirit.
